    The two sacred sanctuaries: Makkah and Madinah.

    The circumambulation area immediately around the Ka'bah.

    The sacred sites of the Hajj days, collectively: Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifah.

    The tent city that becomes your base for several days of Hajj.

  • Arafah

    عرفة

    The plain outside Makkah where pilgrims stand on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah. The essential pillar. “Hajj is Arafah.”

  • Muzdalifah

    مزدلفة

    The open area between Arafah and Mina where pilgrims spend the night of the 9th under the sky.

  • Jamarat

    الجمرات

    The three pillars in Mina stoned during Hajj, marking where Ibrahim عليه السلام rejected Shaytan.

  • Zamzam

    زمزم

    The blessed well within the Haram; its water is available throughout the mosque.

  • Miqat

    plural: mawaqitميقات

    The boundary at which pilgrims must enter Ihram. Five designated stations, by direction of approach.

    ذو الحجة

    The final month of the Islamic year, in which Hajj takes place on the 8th to the 13th.

  • Yawm at-Tarwiyah

    يوم التروية

    The 8th. The day pilgrims enter Ihram for Hajj and move to Mina.

  • Yawm an-Nahr

    يوم النحر

    The 10th. The day of sacrifice, and the busiest day of Hajj.

  • Ayyam at-Tashriq

    أيام التشريق

    The 11th to 13th. Days of dhikr and Rami, spent in Mina after the big day.

  • Ihram

    إحرام

    The sacred state entered with intention and Talbiyah before the Miqat. Marked for men by two plain garments, with restrictions for everyone.

  • Halq

    حلق

    Shaving the head to exit Ihram. For men.

  • Taqsir

    تقصير

    Shortening the hair to exit Ihram. The required method for women, a fingertip trim; an option for men.

  • Raml

    رمل

    The brisk walk in the first three circuits of certain Tawaf. Men only.

  • Idtiba'

    اضطباع

    Baring the right shoulder during the relevant Tawaf. Men only.

  • Fidyah

    فدية

    Expiation required for certain violations of Ihram restrictions. Learn the rulings from your scholar.

  • Tamattu'

    تمتع

    Umrah first, exit Ihram, then re-enter Ihram for Hajj. The most common form for pilgrims from abroad.

  • Qiran

    قران

    Umrah and Hajj combined in a single Ihram.

  • Ifrad

    إفراد

    Hajj alone, without Umrah, in one Ihram.

  • Nusuk

    نسك

    The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's official platform. The only sanctioned booking route for Direct Hajj Program countries.

    A package where you move to a second accommodation during part of the Hajj period.

  • Non-shifting

    A package where you keep the same Makkah accommodation before and after the main Hajj days.

  • Mahram

    محرم

    A woman's husband or unmarriageable male relative. Saudi regulations now permit women to perform Hajj without one in a trusted group; scholarly views vary.

  • Service Provider

    The Saudi company actually offering and operating the Hajj package on Nusuk.

  • Package Code

    Nusuk code

    The identifying code for a particular package or configuration. Useful when telling someone exactly which package to find.

  • Hearting a Package

    Preferred package

    Saving or selecting packages you are interested in before booking.

  • Package Configuration

    The exact combination of dates, hotel, room occupancy, camp and flight option you are selecting. Two people can be looking at the same basic package and end up with different configurations and prices.

  • Luxury

    Higher-tier package category, generally using 5-star hotels.

  • Premium

    Generally built around 4-star accommodation and a higher service level than Standard. Note that a Premium package does not automatically mean a premium Mina camp.

  • Standard

    More economical package category, generally using 3-star hotels or residential buildings.

  • Single

    One person in their own hotel room, where offered.

  • Double

    Two people per hotel room. Usually the highest room rate per person after Single.

  • Triple

    Three people per hotel room.

  • Quad

    Four people per hotel room. Usually the least expensive configuration.

  • Group Flight

    Flights arranged as part of the package or provider's allocated group inventory. You select from the flight options attached to that package.

  • Custom Flight

    You choose a different eligible flight rather than the package's designated group flight. This can affect the total price and sometimes your arrival and departure logistics.

  • Land Package

    Excluding flights

    The package price does not include airfare. Flights are added separately.

  • Al-Muaisim Camp

    Muaisim, Al-Muaisem

    A Mina camp location used during the Hajj days. Many packages use this as their base Mina camp.

  • Majar Al-Kabsh

    Another Mina camp location, generally considered more desirable, and it may carry an additional charge depending on the package.

  • Camp 72

    72B

    A specific camp designation within the Mina setup. A package will often specify something like "72B, Al-Muaisim" rather than simply saying "Mina camp".

  • Saudia Towers

    Usually accommodation in the Saudi Hajj towers in the Mashair rather than the traditional tent-style camp. Check the exact building named in your package rather than treating this as one universal category.

The pillar and the farewell. Missing the first is serious; the second is waived for some.

Halq and Taqsir

Shaving and shortening.

Shifting and Non-shifting

Neither is better. It depends entirely on the specific package.
