Eight questions. If Nusuk is not your route we will say so rather than take your email.

The sequence

Eight moments, in this order, once.

Nothing about Hajj is improvised. The whole of it is a sequence, and knowing the sequence is most of knowing what to do.

  1. Men in ihram seated close together in a mosque hall, all seen from behind, the white cloth over one shoulder and the bare shoulder showing.
    The Haram, rows in white
Day 8IhramThe intention is taken at the miqat, and the ordinary world is set down.
  2. The tent city at Mina at first light, rank after rank of white peaked canopies with their air-conditioning units between them, running back to the bare mountains behind.
    The tent city, first light
Day 8MinaThe first night, under canvas, with two million people doing the same thing.
  3. Pilgrims in white on the rocks of Jabal ar-Rahmah at Arafah on the day, umbrellas scattered through the crowd, the white marker pillar at the summit against a pale sky.
    Jabal ar-Rahmah, on the day
Day 9ArafahThe standing. Whatever else happens, Hajj is Arafah.
  4. Two hands in Ihram close over the open ground at Muzdalifah, one cupping a small pile of pebbles gathered for the Jamarat and the other reaching for more.
    Gathering the pebbles
Day 9MuzdalifahOpen ground, the sky, and the stones gathered for tomorrow.
  5. One of the Jamarat pillars inside the multi-storey bridge at Mina: a tall wall of rough stone dropping into a concrete basin, with pilgrims at the rail on the level above.
    The bridge, up close
Day 10JamaratThe first stoning, then the sacrifice, then release from Ihram.
  6. The Ka‘bah seen from directly above in daylight, the crowd circling it drawn by a long exposure into a single blurred spiral, with the green and gold cap of a minaret rising in the foreground.
    The mataf from above
Day 10IfadahBack to the Ka‘bah for the Tawaf that Hajj is not complete without.
  7. A ram with heavy curled horns and a yellow ear tag held by the horn in a close-packed pen of sheep, in full daylight.
    The hady, of Yawm an-Nahr
Day 11–13TashriqMina again. Stoning each afternoon, and the days nobody warns you are the long ones.
  8. The Grand Mosque at sunset from above the courtyard, the Ka‘bah at the centre of a dense crowd, the towers of the city catching the last light behind the arcade.
The last light on the Haram
On leavingWada‘The farewell tawaf. The last thing you do is look at it once more.
